Fillings are used to repair and restore teeth that have been damaged in some way, usually due to decay.

Fillings are a very common treatment to repair damaged teeth, restoring them to full function and leaving them stronger and better protected. Teeth can become damaged for a variety of reasons, although the most common reason for placing a filling is cavities or caries. Other causes of damage that may result in the need for a filling or fillings include wear and tear or accident/injury.

What is the cause of cavities/caries?

Cavities are most commonly the result of tooth decay, which can occur if plaque and tartar are left to build up in the mouth, resulting in the presence of damaging bacteria which can dissolve and weaken the surface of the tooth.

How long is the treatment?

In most cases, fillings can be placed in just one appointment. The length of this appointment will depend on the damage present and the number of fillings that are necessary.

Is the treatment painful?

There’s no need to worry about pain or discomfort during the treatments, as we’ll always apply a numbing agent to the area, ensuring you don’t feel a thing while we’re treating you.

What is the treatment process like?

After numbing the area, we’ll remove the decayed and damaged parts of the tooth and clean and disinfect the area. We’ll then apply the filling material and seal the tooth to prevent any reinfection and strengthen the tooth.

What are fillings made of?

Traditionally, fillings have been made of a metal amalgam material that is very strong and durable but leaves a silver-like appearance in the mouth. At Rothwell Dental Care and Implant Centre, we use the most modern materials available whenever possible, so we often place composite fillings. These are made of a composite resin material that mimics the shade and surface of the tooth and can be shaped into a natural-looking appearance.
